Following an emotional 90-minute debate, the Iowa Senate approved a bill Wednesday calling for stronger oversight of private companies taking over managing Iowa’s Medicaid program. Senate File 2213 is aimed at strengthening Gov. Terry Branstad's plans for managed care of the state-federal Medicaid program, which serves 560,000 low-income and disabled people at a cost of about $4.2 billion annually. The bill passed 32-16, with six Republicans joining Democrats in support. The measure now heads to the Iowa House, where it faces an uncertain future. Sen. Amanda Ragan, D-Mason City, chairwoman of the Senate’s Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee, said the proposal is intended to protect Iowans with tough, bipartisan monitoring and accountability. “Our job is to protect the health care safety net for Iowa families. We are all one accident or one illness away from depending upon Medicaid,” Ragan said.
