Iowa Medicaid leaders offered assurances to legislators Wednesday that they were ready to oversee a shift to private management of the program on April 1, but several state senators weren’t buying it. “There’s so much frustration out there that when we talk to people, they actually break down and cry. … What do I tell these people?” said Sen. Bill Dotzler, a Waterloo Democrat. Dotzler and other legislative critics challenged Department of Human Services officials at a Statehouse hearing Wednesday afternoon. State administrators said they have set up multiple layers of oversight of the three national companies that are to run the $4 billion Medicaid program. They said they have employees working in the offices of the managed-care organizations to ensure health services are properly covered and bills are paid on time.
