Delaware may have inched a step closer this week to landing a major research and development hub backed by the U.S. Department of Energy. U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and top officials from the agency's 17 national laboratories visited the University of Delaware on Friday to discuss existing and future partnerships — a move that officials say could have major implications for local researchers and the state's top science-based companies. The end goal, they said, is to eventually convince one of those national labs to open a satellite facility here to anchor a public-private partnership devoted to energy research and development, similar to what the Delaware Biotechnology Institute has done for biotech startups since 2001. Such a move could help local colleges and universities gain access to federal research grants, while giving companies like Bloom Energy, W.L. Gore & Associates and the future DowDuPont access to some of the world's most advanced research capabilities.
