HONOLULU, HAWAII--June 20, 2016 -- Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee Leina’ala Ahu Isa has issued a statement on her Facebook page that OHA spent $33 million on the Akaka Bill. (See Lei Ahu Isa FB Page) According to Keli’i Akina, Ph.D., candidate for OHA Trustee-at-Large, "The estimate of $33M approaches the ballpark of what OHA has wasted on its pursuit of a race-based nation as the costs of the Akaka Bill alone are known to be at least $28M." Akina continues, "OHA`s political diversion of public funds intended for the benefit of needy Hawaiians is disgraceful and raises legal and constitutional questions." In her statement, Trustee Isa writes, "Akaka Bill cost our Beneficiaries Trust Fund approximately $33M...this could have gone to help with housing, shelter, scholarships, entrepreneurship, health care, kupunas, and our keiki as well as other needs of our beneficiaries."
