Some inmates to receive federal grant money for college classesFor the first time in more than 20 years, some inmates in West Virginia will soon be able to use money from the federal Pell grant to earn a degree behind bars. Glenville State was one of only 67 colleges across the country — and the only one in West Virginia — to be included in an experimental program which will allow inmates to use federal money for college courses, the U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday. “It gives them hope,” said Jim Morris, Glenville’s senior vice president for student and external relations. “Whenever they get out of prison, there will actually be a chance for them to have a better life, as opposed to going to back to the way they were before.” The program, dubbed the Second Chance Pell, was first announced last summer, building on recommendations from the president’s My Brother’s Keeper task force. Since the announcement, more than 200 schools have applied to participate. - See more at: www.wvgazettemail.com/dm-news-education/20160625/some-inmates-to-receive-federal-grant-money-for-college-classes
