A former Democratic legislator from Waterbury pleaded guilty to bank fraud and admitted he lied on an application for a mortgage obtained through a federal program. Victor Cuevas, 52, was elected to represent the 75th House District in 2012 and resigned in March in the midst of a federal investigation. The U.S. Attorney's office said Monday that Cuevas pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and faces up to five years in prison when he's sentenced in September. Cuevas first told the bank where he was seeking the mortgage that his nephew had gifted him $7,000 toward the purchase of a home in Bristol. The nephew turned out to be a subordinate from Cuevas' job with the city of Waterbury. When officials asked for the man's bank account information, Cuevas withdrew the application.
