Savannah NAACP chapter discusses progress of voter empowerment campaignWith the November election cycle slowly closing in, the Savannah Chapter of the NAACP hosted a forum discussing voter empowerment moderated by former Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson. The forum was organized by the NAACP Political Action Committee, and highlighted the organization’s continuing efforts to increase voter turnout at both local and national elections. In the most recent election on May 24, Chatham County’s voter turnout was only 17 percent. At the forum, NAACP members and others in attendance were given progress updates on the three facets of the empowerment campaign: voter registration, voter education and getting voters to the polls. Linda Carter, executive committee secretary for the Savannah NAACP and head of the voter registration effort in the empowerment campaign, said that registration isn’t as much of a problem as education and getting people to the polls.
