The Mississippi Department of Revenue had issued about $305 million in tax refunds this year, which is ahead of last year’s totals despite having to lay off about 35 temporary workers used to help open tax returns. DOR’s roughly $73 million budget has been trimmed more than $1 million because of state budget cuts this fiscal year, which ends Thursday. The new budget year begins Friday. “Right now, we’re about the same place on processing refunds as we were last year,” DOR spokeswoman Kathy Waterbury said. Through June 20 of this year the DOR has issued 718,658 refunds totaling $304,503,253. Read more: www.hattiesburgamerican.com/story/news/local/2016/06/26/state-issues-tax-refunds/86418078/
