Kentucky Department of Agriculture officials are stepping up efforts to stop credit card fraud by scammers stealing consumers' data at gas pumps. On Monday, ahead of the Fourth of July holiday and peak summer travel season, Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles and Louisville police held an event at the FiveStar Food Mart on Bluegrass Parkway in Jeffersontown. The point: to shed light on the crime and encourage gas customers to report any tampering they spot while filling up. Thieves install small electronic devices, or skimmers, that capture data from bank cards. Kentucky has had a half dozen reported cases, but police suspect it's happening far more frequently because consumers find out only later that they've been hacked after odd charges pop up on their credit card statement, said Sgt. Phil Russell, an LMPD spokeman. An estimated $3 billion globally has been lost to such scamming.
