Cleveland Hopkins Airport unveils new ticketing lobby, $36 million in upgradesCLEVELAND, Ohio – With about a month to go before tens of thousands of visitors descend upon the city for the Republican National Convention, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport's dazzling new exterior façade and ticketing hall are open for business. Mayor Frank Jackson, Interim Airport Director Fred Szabo and other local dignitaries cut the ribbon Monday afternoon on the $36 million, year-long construction project, which they said signifies that the airport remains viable and competitive. "Only two years ago a significant airline flight reduction led many to believe that our best days were behind us," Szabo said, referring to United Airlines' decision to close its Cleveland hub in 2012. "Not only was that inaccurate, but Hopkins has experienced an unprecedented recovery. .... This is a great time for Cleveland and for Cleveland Hopkins Airport. The 'curse' is behind us. The RNC is ahead of us. And Cleveland Hopkins Airport stands as a transportation hub in the community that we can all be proud of." So how nice is it?Outside the building, gone is the old façade and boxy overhang that served as shelter for travelers hauling luggage into the ticketing lobby. In its place is a gleaming, modern 600-foot metal paneled canopy, with embedded skylights, that gives patrons an extra 12 feet of protection from the elements.
