Eastern Michigan to lay off 10 staff members, cut 40 vacant positionsYPSILANTI, MI - In an effort to reduce its budget for the coming year, Eastern Michigan University will lay off about 10 people and eliminate another 40 vacant positions. EMU Interim President Don Loppnow said "approximately 10" positions will be laid off once a 30-day "bumping" scenario is completed for bargained employees. "The reductions are being conducted following all appropriate collective bargaining agreements," Loppnow said in a message sent out to the campus Monday evening, June 27. "The university's processes for non-union employees were followed to ensure employees are being treated fairly under these circumstances." In his message to the university, Loppnow noted none of the staff reductions will consist of faculty members, but that reducing the EMU staff was a necessity to reduce expenses to balance the budget.
