Saline state Rep. Driskell wants state code to regulate septic systemsSALINE, MI - Washtenaw County state Rep. Gretchen Driskell, D-Saline, along with Rep. Julie Plawecki, D-Dearborn Heights, have introduced two bills aimed at establishing a statewide code for the regulation of residential septic systems in Michigan. According to the two lawmakers, there currently is no set of statewide regulations. Michigan is the only state in the United States that lacks a set of uniform standards that regulate residential sewage treatment systems. Only 11 of the 83 counties in Michigan have implemented programs to detect failing or failed septic systems. This set of bills is aimed at changing that. "As the Great Lakes State, we are surrounded by a beautiful and precious natural resource, fresh water," said Plawecki. "This legislation seeks to protect Michigan's water quality, public health, tourism and agriculture." House Bill 5732 would add to the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to establish a baseline for statewide septic regulations.
