HASLETT - Haslett Public Schools is being sued by the federal government over more than $57,000 in tax refunds the feds say the district should not have received. Federal officials say in U.S. District Court filings that Haslett officials submitted an adjusted tax return in 2014 claiming it had overpaid on its 2011 taxes. The district received $57,171 in refunds from the Internal Revenue Service for the 2011 tax period between June 16 and July 18 of 2014, according to court records. Federal officials say those repayments shouldn't have been made, and is requesting that the court order Haslett to repay them plus interest. At issue is a 2010 state law that required schools to withhold 3% of employee wages, said Steve Cook, director of finance for the district. The law required school officials to take money directly from payroll and send to it to the state’s Office of Retirement Services from 2010 until September of 2012, according to Bob Dwan, associate executive director of the Michigan School Business Officials.
