Forfeitures, civil actions net U.S. Attorney's office more than $18 millionThe U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Georgia collected more than $18.4 million for civil and criminal activities in 2015. The largest amount came from the Savannah-area Memorial Health University Medical Center and its physicians group, which paid nearly $10 million to settle allegations they submitted false claims. The settlement was the result of a whistleblower action. In the Augusta area, $25,000 was collected from Jeffrey Sponseller of Sponseller Eye Care One. Sponseller agreed to pay $275,000 to settle the civil action the federal government brought against him for defrauding Medicare, $25,000 of which was paid immediately. Sponseller was sentenced to serve 33 months in prison in 2014.
