Chicago Public Schools gives layoff notices to 227 staff workersChicago Public Schools turned to a familiar tactic in the face of its latest fiscal crisis, slashing its nonteaching ranks and eliminating vacant positions in a bid to save tens of millions of dollars. CPS said the job cuts it outlined Friday take out a total of 433 positions and will save about $32 million this year. That will barely dent the nearly half-billion budget gap the district is trying to fill mostly through help from state lawmakers and concessions from the Chicago Teachers Union. "There's no doubt that these cuts are painful," district chief Forrest Claypool said in a statement. "However, with limited resources and a budget crisis not just this year but into the foreseeable future, we had no choice." As district officials ask Springfield for a bailout, they can point to the central office cuts and say they've done their part to save money without affecting the classroom.
