TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday signed a $34.5 billion budget, but not before slicing into the $300 million Democrats added to the spending plan earlier in the week. Christie handed down his line-item vetoes Thursday evening amid a stalemate over transportation funding and hours before the start of the new fiscal year. The Legislature passed the budget Monday in remarkably quick votes, a side dish to a voting session focused on the more controversial transportation tax maneuvers. Vested with more authority than most U.S. governors, Christie can unilaterally strike spending items from the budget. Democrats do not have veto-proof majorities in the Legislature to override him. In his budget message Christie called what Democrats presented him an "irresponsible spending plan."
