The Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, anticipating continued costs due to fallout from past sexual abuse of children by priests, is planning to sell its Hollidaysburg headquarters and relocate its offices to Altoona parish property. The diocese announced the plans in a Friday statement. The headquarters would be sold to Garvey Manor Nursing Home, which is next to the offices in Hollidaysburg and is planning to expand. The diocesan offices would be moved into the school building of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Altoona once a lease held by a child-care center expires in October. The diocese says it would work with the center, which would remain on site until it finds another location. A state grand jury report earlier this year said dozens of priests and other church officials sexually abused children in the diocese in past decades, and it accused past bishops of covering up and enabling abuse.
