High court’s abortion ruling could block targeting of WV’s two clinics
Last week’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that defended abortion rights isn’t expected to have an immediate effect on new laws that restrict the procedure in West Virginia, but the decision could blunt any push to resurrect proposals that target abortion clinics. Earlier this year, state lawmakers passed legislation — the so-called abortion “dismemberment” bill — that bans the most common procedure for second-trimester abortions. That new law took effect May 29. In 2014, the Legislature approved a bill that outlaws abortions after 20 weeks gestation. The recent Supreme Court ruling struck down Texas regulations that required doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and forced clinics to meet hospital-like standards for outpatient surgery. “I don’t believe it’s going to have any effect on the laws in West Virginia,” said Karen Cross, political director for the National Right to Life Committee and the group’s liaison to the West Virginia Legislature. “As far as the laws we have passed thus far, I believe they would be upheld if challenged in state court.” - See more at: www.wvgazettemail.com/news/20160703/high-courts-abortion-ruling-could-block-targeting-of-wvs-two-clinics
