Rhode Island's part-time legislators got a raise on Friday, albeit a teeny one. Their salaries went up by 0.1 percent, from $15,414 to $15,429 during the 12 months that will end on June 30, 2017. (The House speaker and Senate president get twice the pay provided to rank-and-file lawmakers.) Salaries for state lawmakers are governed by Article VI, Section 3, of the state Constitution, which calls for legislators’ pay to be adjusted annually based on "changes in the cost of living, as determined by the United States government during a 12-month period ending in the immediately preceding year." In recent years, not every state legislator has accepted the raise, however. Stay tuned.
