PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is getting more than $8 million in federal funding to ensure that the state is prepared for an emergency. The state's congressional delegation announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded about $8.1 million, to be administered by the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency. The money will be used to help the state's government agencies and organizations prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies, disasters and mass-casualty events. It will also be used for training and for purchasing essential equipment. U.S. Sen. Jack Reed says preparedness is critical, whether it's for a major storm or an attack.
