Jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney and the aviation unit of General Electric Co. have each received $1 billion Air Force contracts to design and test next-generation military fighter engines. Pratt & Whitney, the East Hartford subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., said advances in propulsion technology must outpace changing threats. The Air Force program is intended to advance high-speed and long-endurance performance requirements, Pratt & Whitney said. Pratt & Whitney demonstrated a three-stream fan in 2013 and intends to demonstrate the three-stream technology in an engine environment in 2017. The third stream provides an extra source of air flow to improve efficiency and reduce fuel burn, or to deliver additional air flow through the core for higher thrust and cooling air. U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy and Reps. Joe Courtney, Rosa DeLauro and John Larson praised the contract win. They called it a boon for national security, Connecticut's manufacturing workers and the state's economy. Read more: www.courant.com/business/hc-air-force-engine-contract-20160701-story.html
