With the new fiscal year starting Friday, state comptroller Kevin Lembo says the state budget deficit for the just-completed year was $315.8 million. The official statistics are traditionally released in September when the state's books are closed, but Lembo released the total as the best number at the moment. He said he would unveil an unaudited number on September 30 and then a final number before New Year's Eve. Lembo agrees with the recent projection by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's budget office on the $315.8 million deficit, while the legislature's nonpartisan fiscal office has a slightly higher number of $322.9 million. When compared to an annual state budget of nearly $20 billion, the differences in the two deficit numbers are tiny.
