State budget cuts eliminate some beds for addiction treatmentBarring a surprise influx of money, Lebanon Pines soon will lose five of its 25 addiction treatment beds reserved for those who have been accused of low-level crimes. The latest casualty of the state budget, the beds are just a portion of the 123 across the state set to go offline after the Judicial Branch announced in June it no longer would fund them. In Connecticut, where officials have built up an arsenal of 295 such beds since the state began diverting qualifying accused offenders to treatment rather than jail in 2002, the impact of the cuts likely will be substantial. Even before the Judicial Branch’s latest announcement, about 400 people sat on a waiting list for the beds each day, according to Stephen Grant, executive director of the state Judicial Branch Court Support Services Division.
