Federal transgender-bathroom directive affects Georgia politics
The federal directive in May telling school systems to accommodate transgender students in bathrooms and locker rooms has created a political backlash.
Georgia has joined several other states suing the Obama administration over the bathroom guidelines
State Sen. Josh McKoon is one of the local politicians who thinks Obama’s directive is overreaching.
To the extent there is a real problem with transgender students being allowed to choose their bathroom and other facilities, “the appropriate way to deal with that is that it ought to be reported to the school board, then to the superintendent and move its way up,” said McKoon, R-Columbus. “The President has it backwards. It should start at the local level first.”
