NASHVILLE — The state of Tennessee is making it possible for families and individuals with disabilities to open special tax-free savings accounts to pay for qualified expenses, with 14 investment options provided by the state's Treasury Department. State Treasurer David H. Lillard Jr. recently announced the launch of the program, ABLE Tennessee — Achieving a Better Life Experience program. Tennessee is one of the first states to offer these savings accounts, enabled under federal tax law by Congress. ABLE TN is a savings program to help individuals with disabilities put aside money to pay the costs of qualified expenses, including education, housing, transportation, employment, training and support, assistive technology, personal support services, financial management, administrative services, legal fees, health and wellness, oversight and monitoring, and funeral and burial expenses. Lillard said in a recent Nashville press conference that the accounts are easy to set up and manage on a website, AbleTN.gov, operated by his agency.
