The national digital publication Money Inc.says disbarred Mississippi lawyer Richard “Dickie” Scruggs is the richest current or former attorney in the world with $1.7 billion.
Nat Berman of New York, author of the article, said Scruggs is best known for tobacco and asbestos cases and amassed more than $1 billion in judgments against various companies.
Reached Friday, Berman said lots of criteria went into coming up with the list including websites like Celebritynetworth, public records on homes, salary information and possessions researched from various sources.
The article said the average lawyer’s salary is $133,000 a year. The publication’s ranking reflects current lawyers, former lawyers, judges and others in the legal field. It ranked Scruggs first based upon his reported revenues from civil cases and judgments.
In 2008, Scruggs pleaded guilty and eventually served six years in federal prison. Today, at the age of 70, he has completed his sentence. In his article, Berman says Scruggs has retained his fortune.
