July Fourth was coming up, and I was hoping patriotism would be in the air at the state Capitol for a special legislative session, but I was mistaken. Two months after the regular legislative session ended, lawmakers were back for the special session called by Gov. Phil Bryant to allow him authority to further dip into the state rainy-day fund. Let’s just say there was no coming together of Democrats and Republicans. Like the regular session, it was bickering back and forth. Democrats say the Republican leadership cast them aside in budget discussions and that legislation all year hadn’t been properly vetted. Republicans were eager to respond to something a Democrat said in an effort to try to prove it didn’t happen that way. Before the two-day special session ended, it reminded me of a squabble among kids on a playground. One said this; the other said it didn’t happen that way.
