Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed a bill today that would have relieved some 45 larger communities in the state from paying portions of the cost of highway construction projects in their towns. In Michigan, the road funding formula since 1951 required the larger cities to pay for part of any freeway or major highway project coming through their city limits. Right now, with scores of freeway and state highway miles in Michigan due for costly projects, cities were bracing for a big bill, especially in Oakland County where a giant $1-billion project on I-75 is set to begin this month. But Snyder said he was concerned that the bill – SB 577 – created a patchwork of funding mechanisms across the state and would force road funding dollars to be shifted from rural to urban projects. “The bill seeks to mitigate a provision that can, on occasion, create road funding challenges for some communities,” said Snyder in a statement released Friday. “However, eliminating local government cost sharing altogether is a piecemeal approach to what needs to be a much broader discussion.” Read more: www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/news/politics/2016/07/01/snyder-vetoes-roads-bill-leaving-large-cities-tab/86603988/
