Saying the local economy is thriving, Metro Council Democrats announced Friday morning that they want to pursue an even higher minimum wage for Louisville's lowest-paid workers. President David Yates, who stood with five other members outside The Tavern in Old Louisville to celebrate the wage rate going up to $8.25 an hour on Friday, said his colleagues made the right decision when they voted to boost the minimum wage. He said Democrats will review the overall economic impact once the final $9 an hour rate is set on July 1, 2017. "So far the numbers have been positive for Louisville," said Yates, D-25th District. Two years ago, Mayor Greg Fischer threatened to block a $10.10 an hour wage for local workers, saying he would settle on a rate between $8.50 and $8.75. Democrats were unable to get the 18 votes needed to override a mayoral veto and reached a compromise with Fischer of $9 an hour.
