INDIANAPOLIS — The Republican-controlled Indiana General Assembly and Gov. Mike Pence, also a Republican, enacted 215 new state laws during the 10-week legislative session held earlier this year. As is customary, most of the new statutes take effect today. Here's a summary of some of the ways Hoosiers will have to adjust their lives to comply with the additions and revisions to the Indiana Code: Road funding — Up to $1 billion in mostly state and local reserve funds now are available for spending on road and bridge preservation projects. Local governments that have enacted a wheel tax, or maintain plentiful "rainy day" funds, also will be allowed to access $254 million set to be distributed through a state matching grant program. (House Enrolled Act 1001, Senate Enrolled Act 67) Dunes alcohol — The Department of Natural Resources is authorized to obtain an alcohol sales permit from the state to serve beer, wine and liquor at bars and restaurants in the renovated Indiana Dunes State Park pavilion, without being subject to local review or approval.
