Too sick to sue: Terminally ill Iowan gives up pursuing right-to-die caseJennifer Holm is giving up her plan to sue the state of Iowa for the right to obtain doctor assistance in ending her life. “I wanted to do that so badly and wanted to be a part of that so badly but, physically, I’m just not going to be the one to do it,” Holm said while sitting on her front porch in Ankeny this week. Holm, 45, has two terminal illnesses she has battled for years. She hasn’t been given a specific timeline from doctors, but said she can tell that the diseases are advancing. She cites her dwindling energy, which has left her sleeping 14 hours or more most days, as the reason for her decision not to pursue a lawsuit. Holm has emerged in recent months as a face of a growing effort for Iowa to become the sixth state to provide medical assistance in dying. She has testified before state lawmakers while also seeking the assistance of attorneys and groups that could help her launch a court challenge.
