LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas should expand its investment in early childhood education, the newly installed superintendent of the state's largest school district said Tuesday. In a talk at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, Little Rock School District Superintendent Michael Poore said there are about 15,000 students in Arkansas who come from economically challenged backgrounds and could benefit from early childhood education but are not receiving it. "This early jump-start in terms of preschool is really critical," said Poore, a former Bentonville School District superintendent who replaced Baker Kurrus as the Little Rock district's superintendent July 1. The district has been under state control since January 2015 because of academic distress. Poore said it costs a little more than $7,000 to provide a year of early childhood education to a child, whereas the annual cost to house a prison inmate is $35,000 to $40,000.
