Ground is finally moving on the island's much-anticipated West Maui Hospital and Medical Center, as hospital officials announced Wednesday that a groundbreaking ceremony would be held for the facility Aug. 15 in Lahaina. The ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. on the site of the future medical campus at Kaka'alaneo Drive, just mauka of Honoapiilani Highway. The event is open to the public. "We've been talking about this for so long," said Brian Hoyle, president of project developer Newport Hospital Corp. "We just hope everybody can come out and witness the event." Located on 15 acres just below the Ka'anapali Coffee Farms development, the medical campus will include a 25-bed, critical-access hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, a 40-bed skilled nursing facility, a 40-unit, assisted-living facility, two medical office buildings and a future drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility.
