POCATELLO — The dean of the new Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Robert Hasty, hopes the private medical school on the Idaho State University campus in Meridian will keep the Gem State from slipping below Mississippi and becoming dead last in the U.S. for the number of physicians per capita. Hasty shared with members of the Pocatello Rotary on Thursday that currently Idaho ranks 49th in that category as well as 49th for the number of family doctors and 48th in the number of people receiving graduate level medical educations. “We’re in the opportunity business,” Hasty said about the private school’s mission to provide more physicians for the rural states of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota. In February, Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter announced that a private-public partnership would bring the state’s first medical school to the ISU campus in Meridian.
