A man on Thursday was sentenced in Weld County to 80 years in prison after he was convicted by a jury earlier this year of attempted murder of a peace officer, among other charges. The morning of Jan. 30, 2015, authorities said the man, Hugo Garza, 31, was in a fight with a woman who was standing near his truck in Evans. He grabbed a .44 Magnum handgun and fired a shot through the roof of his Ford Ranger pickup truck. Garza then fired at the woman directly, according to a news release from the Weld County district attorney’s office. He continued shooting as she ran away, and then shot at a man in the area who was trying to help her. Garza also shot at an Evans police officer, Sgt. Pete Bratton, as he responded to the incident. SWAT officers were called to respond and were able to arrest Garza. Garza’s shots narrowly missed each of the three victims. In May, after just six hours of deliberation, a jury found Garza guilty of several charges that also included attempted manslaughter, disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment.
