Allegations of sexual assault on a young girl in Fort Collins, reports of harassment, fights and drug use and viral video of a transient man beating passersby with a pole in downtown Denver are fueling outrage and fear surrounding the Front Range’s transient population. Complaints about cardboard signs, sun-worn travelers and violent or unseemly behavior in Old Town Fort Collins boiled over at a recent community meeting. What, residents asked, is being done about the violent transients in our community? Fort Collins Police Services, which organized the meeting, planned to talk about community policing. Neighbors largely interested in speaking about issues of homelessness and transience filled a community room in the Old Town Library to capacity. While calls mount for area law enforcement and lawmakers to “do something” about growing concerns of criminality among the homeless, others note not all homeless or transients are criminals — many just need or want help —and that individual behaviors, not a class of people, should be punished.
