Crowd gathered Saturday to urge Gov. Mike Pence and legislators to add the words "sexual orientation, gender identity" to protections guaranteed under Indiana's civil rights law.It would be simple for Indiana to be open and welcoming to all people, said protesters at a rally Saturday at the Statehouse. Gov. Mike Pence and state legislators just need to add four words and a comma — “sexual orientation, gender identity” — to the state's civil rights law. More than 100 people stood at the Statehouse steps on a cold afternoon to encourage the governor and state legislators to include that change to secure protections for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community that are not already guaranteed. The proposed change, Senate Bill 2, would prohibit discrimination in civil rights statutes. The bill, sponsored by Senate Democrats, does not include religious exemptions and has been denounced by opponents for attempting to create special rights based on people's sexuality that they say could force others to violate their religious beliefs.
