Mayor vows district-wide probe of race relations in Boston schoolsBoston Mayor Martin J. Walsh promised a district-wide review of Boston Public Schools in light of allegations by students that their concerns about racist comments and taunts were ignored at Boston Latin School. “This has certainly bothered me, what happened here with these young students, it’s something that should not happen,” Walsh said. “We have to really look at what’s going to happen district-wide. The experiences our kids are having in school shouldn’t be racism, the experience should be positive and we want to build a system where it is positive.” The accusations first surfaced last Monday when two students from the group Black Leaders Advocating for Change and Knowledge posted a YouTube video saying the school ignored racial slurs directed at minority students. As the Herald reported last week, the students encouraged their peers to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #BlackAtBLS. The campaign went viral and today a number of students arrived at BLS wearing black clothing in a show of solidarity with those speaking out and planned to pose for a picture after school. Walsh said he would be meeting with the students. Continued at www.bostonherald.com/news/local_coverage/2016/01/mayor_vows_district_wide_probe_of_race_relations_in_boston_schools .
