Senate committee furthers bill to remove preschool day requirementIn a voice vote last week with no nays heard, the state Senate Education Committee passed on to the full Senate a bill that would remove the upcoming requirement that counties offer early childhood education programs five days per week. Instead, the legislation would remove the day requirement but mandate an equal number of instructional minutes, said Sen. Robert Plymale, D-Wayne and lead sponsor of the bill (SB 146). Current law will generally require, starting next school year, that all public school systems offer five full days of prekindergarten to 4-year-old students whose families want it. Unlike kindergarten, preK isn’t required in West Virginia. A child must be 5 to enter kindergarten. State Department of Education spokeswoman Kristin Anderson said only about a fifth of the state’s universal preK programs are offering five days this school year. - See more at: www.wvgazettemail.com/news/20160123/senate-committee-furthers-bill-to-remove-preschool-day-requirement#sthash.t9xoQhyo.dpuf
