In what can sound like a game of substance abuse Whac A Mole, the Senate health committee on Tuesday moved forward with a bill that would ban the sale of the latest substance that is being abused and even killing people: powdered caffeine. “People are inhaling it,” Long Island GOP Sen. Kemp Hannon remarked after discussing the measure, which came up last year but died in the Assembly. Since then, the federal Food and Drug Administration has updated a warning about powdered caffeine, which is linked to at least 18 deaths. They are telling people not to use powdered caffeine. While it can be difficult to overdose on cups of brewed coffee, powdered caffeine is entirely different, according to the state Health Department as well as others following this issue.
