Barge capsizes near Hahnville, closing Mississippi River to shipsA barge carrying caustic soda capsized in the Mississippi River above Hahnville on Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 26), forcing the closure of the river to ship traffic between mile markers 126 and 131, according to a spokesman with the U.S. Coast Guard. It resulted from a barge collision between two towing vessels near mile marker 129, which is at the upriver end of the Bonnet Carre Spillway. "The Coast Guard is working with state and local agencies and the responsible party to recover one capsized barge carrying caustic soda in an effort to reopen waterways," the agency said. "There have been no reports of caustic soda entering the water. No injuries were reported. The cause of the incident was under investigation. The collision is the latest in a string of incidents along the Lower Mississippi during an unusual January high river. The river stood at almost 16 1/2 feet at the Carrollton gauge in New Orleans on Tuesday morning, and the Army Corps of Engineers said the water is moving at a brisk 1.25 million cubic feet per second there. The Bonnet Carre Spillway remains open to divert some of the river's flow to Lake Pontchartrain.
