Another resolution introduced by state Sen. Derrick Simmons, D-Greenville, calls for the state to return to the "magnolia flag" as the official state flag. The flag, which featured a large magnolia tree in full bloom, was the official state flag until it was replaced in 1894, Simmons said. Horhn's resolution calls for the establishment of a commission that would come up with a new design then present it to the 2017 Legislature for consideration. Horhn's resolution said the commission's sole purpose would be developing, designing and reporting to the the governor and the Legislature a new design for the official Mississippi state flag on or before Dec. 10. The flag would be unveiled at appropriate ceremonies during the state's bicentennial celebration on Dec. 10, 2017. "The new Mississippi state flag adopted by the commission shall not include the design of the Confederate battle flag," Horhn said. "The commission is charged with a sensitive and responsible task that it shall conduct in an objective manner. The redesigned Mississippi state flag shall honor the past while embracing the promise of the future."
