Democrats file bill to allow public approval of South Carolina's political district boundariesCOLUMBIA — Three Democrats are trying to remove politics from the way political districts are drawn in South Carolina. Senate Minority Leader Sen. Nikki Setzler, D-West Columbia, introduced a bill Wednesday that would create an independent panel under the inspector general's office that would draw a new map for congressional districts, as well as those for the S.C. House and Senate. That map would then be put before the public for a vote. "It takes the politics out of it and it returns the power to the people to decide about reapportionment," he said. Currently, district maps are determined as needed after a census and approved by the General Assembly.
