More than 60 homeless rights activists descended on Sacramento City Hall before Tuesday’s night City Council meeting as an ongoing protest over the city’s anti-camping laws reached seven weeks. The activists want the city to repeal its ban on urban camping, saying the law violates the human rights of the homeless. But city officials have showed no signs of agreeing, arguing the ban is a safeguard of public health. A small group of protesters from the local Black Lives Matter movement joined the protest Tuesday. Many of those who attended the protest appeared to be newcomers to what has been an increasingly tense issue at City Hall. The protesters chanted, “No justice, no peace. All we want is sleep.” Others chanted, “We demand a right to rest.” A half-dozen police officers watched, but no arrests were made.
