Albany -- In certain offices at the state Capitol, the collective sigh of relief was almost audible: U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara announced Monday that his office has not found sufficient evidence to prove criminality in the Cuomo administration's interference with and premature mothballing of the Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption. "We continue to have active investigations related to substantive inquiries that were being conducted by the Moreland Commission at the time of its closure," Bharara added. Bharara's two-sentence statement made no mention of his office's inquiry into contracting associated with the Buffalo Billion initiative. Even so, the news at least partially stitched up what had been a gaping wound in Cuomo's reputation since he announced the demise of the Moreland commission in March 2014. The governor will deliver his 2016 State of the State address and executive budget proposal on Wednesday.
