Staten Island Ferry fire sends four people to hospital in Manhattan Four people were hospitalized when a Staten Island Ferry caught fire at the tip of lower Manhattan, officials said Wednesday. The John F. Kennedy was approaching the Whitehall Terminal about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday when a small fire erupted in the 51-year-old ship’s engine room. The captain shut off the engine, quickly put out the fire and docked the vessel. Six people suffered respiratory problems as smoke billowed into the cabin, officials said. Two were treated at the scene. Four more were taken to Lower Manhattan Hospital for further treatment.
