TOPEKA — Gov. Sam Brownback shared with hard-line conservatives wearing “Make America Great Again” trucker caps and “Socialism sucks” T-shirts personal insights into how small-government state leaders, such as himself, outperform their federal counterparts.
“When you pull government out of something, you get a product that tends to be higher quality and costs you less because you got competition for that,” said Brownback, earnestly making a point about federal failure.
“Look at your telephone and when we used to have a lot of regulation. Look at your airlines when we used to have a lot of regulation. More expensive, fewer options … and poorer service.”
Still, the nation’s president, Donald Trump, had fans at the Conservative Political Action Conference near Washington, D.C. Some joyously waved small Russian flags with “TRUMP” printed on one side of it.
