Sen. Avegalio Aigamaua, chairman of the Senate Retirement Committee, has scheduled for next week Monday a hearing with the ASG Employees Retirement Fund board of trustees to gets answers to problems that have surfaced recently in the media about the Fund. The hearing followed a suggestion during yesterday’s Senate session where Sen. Galeai Tu’ufuli pointed out that the media has reported on problems with the Retirement Fund, which is the only pension plan for current and future retirees. While the governor appoints the board to oversee the Fund, Galeai said the Fono has oversight on this Fund to ensure that it is well protected. He questioned where the Retirement Fund’s board members are, when all of these problems — reported by the media — are occurring and it’s hurting the multi-million dollar fund, which he again stressed is for ASG current and future retirees. Samoa News reported in Monday and yesterday’s editions the outcome of a forensic audit, conducted by an off island firm, that found — among other things — excessive travel costs by former Retirement Fund Office executive director Luatua Filisouaiga Ta’afua and other problems.
