Sen. Tuaolo Raises Legalizing Gambling As ‘New’ Revenue Source
At last Thursday’s Senate committee hearing, Sen. Tuaolo Manaia Fruean asked ASEDA board member Iulogologo Joseph Pereira if the government has considered looking at legalizing gambling to raise revenue. He says the government continues to tax the same things in order to raise revenue, but he says he keeps thinking about the recent Powerball drawing (which went up to $1.8 billion and will benefit more than 20 states). Iulogologo said its’ the responsibility of the Fono to come up with new laws including ones that provide new sources of revenue. ASEDA board member Keniseli Lafaele, who is also Commerce director, added that the government’s plans for building a new hotel at the site of the old Rainmaker Hotel includes this particular issue — gambling.
