ALBANY - The number of state workers earning more than $100,000 a year grew 8 percent between 2014 and 2015, state records show. The total top earners, about 30,050 in all, represented a small portion of the state’s roughly 180,000-member workforce, a review of salary records by Gannett’s Albany Bureau showed. The increase in those earning more than $100,000 came after the total in 2014 fell for the first time in at least five years. In 2014, about 27,700 workers were paid more than $100,000. Unions pointed out that their members average a much lower salary: The average is about $42,700 for members of the Civil Service Employees Association, the state’s largest public-sector union.
